A study in Scarlet is the first detective novel to feature the characters of Doctor Watson and Sherlock Holmes, who would later become two of the most famous literary detective characters. The book's title derives from a speech given by Holmes to his companion Doctor Watson. In this novel, the two characters meet for the first time and decide to share a flat at 221B Baker Street. Holmes reveals to Watson that he is a consulting detective. In the first case where they work together, Scotland Yard asks Holms to investigate the murder of a man at Lauriston Gardens. The story is divided into two parts.
